Granting funds to empower organizations

The Flagstar Foundation is committed to empowering individuals and communities to achieve lasting prosperity and meaningful progress. Our vision is to foster resilient, thriving communities that benefit all Flagstar Bank stakeholders and community members alike. We believe that when our communities succeed, we succeed together.

The Flagstar Foundation provides grants to nonprofit organizations that have measurable outcomes and align with our corporate philanthropic priorities:

  • Workforce readiness – We support organizations preparing individuals with barriers to employment to earn a living wage. This can include apprenticeship programs, skilled trades training, STEM initiatives, and literacy.
  • Arts and culture – We support organizations that enhance access to the arts and culture within underserved communities. This focus area encompasses visual, literary, and performing arts, and may include arts education programs, art therapy initiatives, as well as community-based performances and exhibitions.
  • Financial capability – We support organizations serving individuals with low to moderate incomes to build knowledge, well-being, security, and confidence. This is through VITA tax preparation assistance programs.

Organizations seeking support from the Foundation must operate within our key market areas, which include:

  • Arizona
  • California
  • Florida
  • Indiana
  • Michigan
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • Ohio
  • Wisconsin

Our grantmaking process

Flagstar Foundation grant opportunities are by invitation only. Nonprofit recommendations are made collaboratively between Foundation staff and leadership in the communities in our key market areas. In most years, the majority of our grants support organizations we’ve previously funded. We consider deep partnerships essential to making a positive difference in the communities we serve, so we prioritize long-term relationships with organizations that share our vision and make a clear impact year-to-year. These are often organizations where we provide our time and talent through volunteering as well. 20% to 30% of Flagstar Foundation grants help fund organizations we’ve never supported before. To stay informed about needs and opportunities for impact, Flagstar teammates spend a great deal of time in our communities, engaging with leaders, residents, and experts. These conversations can lead to invitations by Foundation staff to submit a grant application.

What we don't fund

The Flagstar Foundation does not provide grants for scholarships, capital campaigns or fund event sponsorships. To receive a grant an organization must be a 501c3 non-profit organization in good standing with the IRS.
